Ransomware: what it is and how to soberly protect your business
Ransomware can shut a business down for days. No scare story, but a clear explanation and the concrete measures that genuinely reduce the risk.

Ransomware is a form of extortion software: attackers encrypt your files and demand a ransom to release them. Often they first steal a copy of your data too, to pressure you with the threat of publication. For a business, in the worst case it means days of downtime. The good news: with a handful of measures you sharply reduce both the risk and the damage.
How does ransomware get in?
Usually through familiar, everyday routes:
- a phishing email with an infected attachment or link;
- a leaked or weak password on a service reachable from outside;
- outdated software leaving a known vulnerability open.
In other words: the same basic hygiene that helps against many threats helps here too.
The measures that matter most
- Backups following the 3-2-1 rule, at least one of which is offline or immutable. This is your most important lifeline: if you can restore, you do not have to pay. So make sure you have reliable, tested backups.
- MFA everywhere, so a leaked password alone is not enough. See multi-factor authentication.
- Install updates and patches promptly, especially on anything reachable from the internet.
- Limit permissions. Not everyone needs access to everything; this limits how far an attack spreads.
- Train your people to recognise phishing, the most common entry point. See spotting phishing.
To pay or not?
Police and security experts advise against paying: you fund crime, and there is no guarantee you get your data back. The only real negotiating position is a good backup. Those who can restore hold the stronger hand.
Make sure you have a plan
Decide in advance what you do if it happens anyway: who you call in, where your backups are, how you get back online step by step, and how you communicate to clients. An incident is stressful enough; a simple playbook saves precious time.
