An AI chatbot on your website: valuable or annoying?
An AI assistant can catch customer questions and qualify leads, or drive customers away. When it works, and how to set it up well and securely.
By Limburg Cyber Group
AI chatbots have popped up everywhere, with mixed success. A good assistant effortlessly answers a common question in the evening and hands you a warm lead. A bad one drives visitors away with endless “I don’t understand that” loops. The difference is in the approach.
When a chatbot genuinely adds value
- You get many recurring questions. Opening hours, rates, how to submit something, the status of a request.
- You miss contact outside office hours. An assistant catches questions in the evening and at weekends and collects details for follow-up.
- You want to get visitors to the right place faster. A bot can refer purposefully to the right page or person.
The secret: base it on your information
A generic chatbot that just makes things up is a risk. What works is an assistant that draws solely on your content, FAQs, service pages, documentation, and that honestly says “I don’t know that, let me connect you” when something falls outside its knowledge. That prevents wrong answers (hallucinations) that damage your reputation.
Watch these pitfalls
- Always let people get past it. A clear route to a real person is essential; nothing is more frustrating than being stuck with a bot.
- Be transparent. Make clear that people are talking to an AI assistant.
- Guard privacy. Do not ask for more data than needed and handle what visitors enter carefully, in line with the GDPR. See AI and the GDPR.
- Check the quality. Periodically read back conversations and improve the answers.
Start small and focused
You do not have to automate everything at once. Start with the ten most-asked questions and a neat handover for the rest. As confidence grows, you expand. That fits the broader approach of automating in small steps.
